1221 Avenue of the Americas
The “Why?” Building
As part of the Rockefeller Center expansion known as the XYZ Buildings, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, the Y building, is a staple in New York City history.
Using its history as the ”Y” building to position it as the midtown building that has never conformed to traditional “norms” or what is expected, but instead has always paved its own path asking “Why?”. Why do we have to be Art Deco when we can be Modernist? Why can’t we be trendy but still productive? Why do amenities have to be lifestyle focused when we’re a place of work?
The visual identity follows the same philosophy. In a world where every brand is chasing louder colors, 1221 chose the opposite approach. Why do we need more colors when black and white says everything we need to say? The palette is intentionally restrained, confident enough to stand apart by doing less. Color enters through the people who bring the building to life. Expressive, authentic photography. The architecture itself becomes a character, captured through unexpected angles, dramatic perspectives, and unconventional compositions paired with a bold, unapologetic sans serif and oversized headlines, the system creates a visual language that is direct, modern, and impossible to ignore. Just like the building itself.
